Stargate Universe Season 3: How The Series Could Still Get An Ending after 12 Years

Stargate Universe Season 3: How The Series Could Still Get An Ending after 12 Years

Stargate Universe, the third installment in the Stargate series, concluded in 2011 after only two seasons, leaving fans on an intense cliffhanger. Unfortunately, the chances of a third season seem slim after a decade has passed since the show’s ending. However, recent developments have emerged, offering Stargate enthusiasts a glimmer of hope for future tales within the franchise.

Stargate Universe, the third installment in the Stargate series, differed from its predecessors, Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, in terms of its tone and narrative style. While the previous shows shared a similar humor and setting, Stargate Universe embraced a darker, character-driven storytelling approach. This shift was evidently influenced by the highly regarded Battlestar Galactica and to some extent Star Trek: Voyager.

The primary plot of Stargate Universe revolves around a diverse group comprising soldiers, scientists, and civilians, all marooned on a centuries-old spacecraft named the Destiny, located billions of light years distant from Earth. This ancient vessel embarks on a predetermined odyssey to unravel the mysteries of the universe, while the team finds themselves stranded due to a scarcity of energy, rendering a return home impossible. As the protagonists strive to endure aboard the ship, they confront numerous obstacles such as scarce provisions, malfunctioning technology, and the menacing presence of alien adversaries.

After two seasons, Stargate Universe met its end in 2011 when it was cancelled. The show faced significant challenges, particularly in terms of ratings, as it failed to match the success of its predecessors in the Stargate series. Moreover, it received a blend of reviews from both critics and audiences, with a notable number of individuals finding fault in its sluggish pace and absence of the thrilling action and adventure that characterized SG:1 and SG:A.

Stargate Universe: Season 3 Unlikely, But New Hope For The Franchise

To clarify, it is highly improbable that Stargate Universe will receive a continuation. Renewing cancelled shows is a rare occurrence, although there have been exceptions like The Expanse and Lucifer. Furthermore, the likelihood decreases even further for shows that have been off the air for several years. This is due to the fact that not only do the actors age, but they also tend to be occupied with new projects, making it nearly impossible to gather them all together again.

It seems highly unlikely that the show will ever be revived as an animated series, making it an improbable solution.

In any case, there is ample reason for optimism regarding the future of the franchise. Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2021, the current rights holder of the Stargate franchise, further fuels this optimism. Recent rumors suggest that Amazon is actively considering a new Stargate project, and it would be illogical for them to overlook such a monumental sci-fi franchise. Thus, the focus shifts from questioning whether a new Stargate movie or series will happen at all to pondering when it will actually materialize.

Moreover, it has been over ten years since the previous Stargate series (to be frank, Stargate Origins is not considered in this regard, and those who have watched it understand the reason). Therefore, now would be an excellent opportunity for a reboot or a fresh television show in the Stargate franchise.

New Stargate Show or Movie Could Explain How The Stargate Universe Story Ended

If you were a fan of Stargate Universe and enjoyed the show, you might have been curious about the continuation and conclusion of the story. In the series, drone ships protected every star in the galaxy, making it necessary for the crew of the Destiny to travel to another galaxy, which was a three-year journey away, in search of a new power source. To accomplish this, the crew chose to enter stasis pods, with the hope of awakening in the desired galaxy, unharmed. Regrettably, the story ended with this unresolved outcome, leaving fans unaware of the crew’s ultimate fate.

While the possibility of a third season for SG:U is slim, there remains a realistic opportunity for a future Stargate production to incorporate the story of Stargate Universe as a side plot, revealing the fate of the Destiny and its crew. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate new narratives from the Stargate franchise in the near future, keeping our fingers crossed for their arrival.
