The Expanse Season 7: How Amazon’s Acclaimed Sci-Fi Show Would Have Continued

Despite six successful seasons, Amazon decided to cancel its beloved Sci-Fi series, The Expanse. However, fans can still remain hopeful as we delve into the details of the show’s development and discover what a potential seventh season could have brought to the table.

The Expanse has achieved remarkable success on Amazon Prime and is widely recognized as one of the most authentic Sci-Fi series available. With six seasons already aired, the burning question arises: Will there be a much-anticipated seventh season?

In case there are a few who may not be aware (although it’s unlikely as most probably have already watched the first six seasons before searching), the series takes place several centuries ahead. Elon Musk, seemingly, accomplished the feat of colonizing not only Mars but also other regions within our solar system. However, a pressing issue looms large – intense tensions persist, and the planets frequently teeter on the edge of conflict.

  • In case you’re interested in familiarizing yourself with the lore or reading the books, given the possibility of no season 7, the complete collection is available for purchase here.

Since its debut on SyFy in 2015, The Expanse has garnered a significant fan base, leaving many wondering why there has been no announcement regarding the release date for season 7, even though almost a year has passed since season 6 concluded.

The Expanse Season 7 Is Unlikely To Happen And Here’s Why

After enjoying six successful seasons, The Expanse unfortunately faces the setback of being cancelled.

In fact, this isn’t the initial occasion where the well-liked series “concluded.” Initially, The Expanse was broadcasted on SyFy but got canceled after season 3 due to its expensive production expenses. Subsequently, Amazon stepped in to save the franchise but eventually called it quits after season 6 as well.

During his interview with Gizmodo, showrunner Naren Shankar discussed the reasons behind the decision. He explained that Amazon and Alcon provided excellent support in bringing the show to the conclusion of book six. This ending was always a possibility, as it offered a satisfying and conclusive point for the series.

In an interview with EW, Shankar was questioned about the potential for another revival of the franchise. In response, he stated that the decision ultimately rests with Alcon Television, the studio behind the show, and Amazon. If there is indeed a demand for more, they would be the ones to determine its future.

There are two significant aspects to consider. Firstly, the season finale has been crafted in a manner that could effectively serve as the conclusion for the entire series. However, in addition to that, the series overall remains faithful to the events depicted in the books. In the books, there is a significant time leap of 30 years from the point where season 6 concludes.

The task of transforming every aspect and character of The Expanse to convincingly portray a 30-year time jump would likely pose significant challenges. This could be a major factor motivating the producers to opt for a fresh start rather than risk creating a sequel that lacks credibility.

Shankar, along with producer Ty Franck and the author of the original books, Daniel Abraham, appear to be interested in the idea. They express their enthusiasm in saying, “Speaking for ourselves, Ty, Daniel, and I would absolutely love to do it. Completing the entire book series in that manner would be an extraordinary accomplishment, and we sincerely hope for the opportunity to make it happen.”

Fortunately, even though the chances of the series being renewed are slim, you can still delve into the captivating world of the Expanse to discover how the story unfolds. As the series is adapted from the books, you have the option to explore the continuation of events beyond season 6 by simply transitioning to the literary realm. To seamlessly continue the narrative, I recommend diving into the sixth novel, Persepolis Rising.
